April 10, 1878 - Dec 23, 1955

Benjamin Harrison (B.H.) Cox was born on April 10, 1878. On Aug 9, 1903, he and Louisi Minerva Puckett were married. Louisi was born on Oct. 20, 1882, to Assia Watson (A.W.) Puckett and Patricia Catherine Henson. Assia and Patricia were both born and reared in Craighead County, Arkansas. Louisi was one of 9 children: William, Louisi, Idell, Mary, Issac, Etta, Joseph, Levolia, and Orena. B. H. and Louisi had 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls. Their sons were: Raymond Anthony (May 10, 1909 - 1910), Roy Allen (Mar. 29, 1907-1965), Homer Lee (Jun. 24, 1911 -1994), and Ralph Mitchell (b Jul. 29, 1919). Their daughters were: Alpha Lenita (Minton) (Dec 2, 1913 - Nov.26, 1989); Blanch Laverne (Edgar) (b Sept. 18, 1916); and Lura May (Bustin) (b.Sept. 23, 1904 - Dec. 14, 1949). Lura died of an apparent heart attack while serving as a missionary in Haiti. She is buried in Haiti.
BH and his family lived West of Bono. He had a large rice farm. When the road came through, they split his farm in half. He took advantage of the situation and set up a store to sell their goods. One time, the church down the road became vacant and he bought it and rented it out. There were always prayer meetings and Sunday Services, as many churches leased the space. He built a stone (rock) house and a motel, which still stands on the property.
In 1938 he took his family and his nephew Walter Cox to Ohio, where they worked on a very large farm owned by The Rash family. They stayed for a few years. Women did not work in the fields in Ohio, so their daughters were able to get jobs at National Cash Register. They stayed in Ohio during the war. Since they walked to work, they sent gasoline, and other ration stamps home to be used by their brothers who were raising families. Homer and his family lived in the rock house while the family was in Ohio.
In Bono, B. H. planted many trees around his home. Currently, they are expanding the road, and they have cut the last of the trees he planted.(March 2000) B.H. died on Dec 23, 1955 and Louisi followed on Mar. 7, 1960. They are buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Bono, AR, Their children Raymond, Homer, and Alpha are buried close by.

The Henry Cox Family

The area around Jonesboro, Arkansas in the 1890’s was still sparsely populated, mainly due to the difficulties encountered crossing the Mississippi River. Arkansas became the 25th state on June 15, 1836. Homesteading was a way of life. Indians were still living in the area. They lived in a little town called Bono. Being young and poor was very hard work in those days. The water the family needed was either from a stream or rain water caught and stored in a cistern, or anything else that would hold water. Cutting and splitting wood was part of every day life. Most of the area was forest, and to make gardens and pastures, the trees were cut and stumps pulled. The wood that was cut was needed for many purposes. The purpose, determined the cut of the wood too. They cooked on wood stoves, not gas or electric, and most stoves had a water reservoir to heat water. The hot water was dipped out and put into pans to be used, since they had no other hot water heaters. If a large amount was needed, they put kettles on top of the stove eg. the Saturday night bath. Firewood for cook stoves were cut very small, like kindling. Ash burned hotter than most wood, so it was used for cooking. Furnaces were not invented, and in the winter, wood was also needed for the pot belly stove or fireplace to keep warm. The wood used for the heating the house was larger and was determined by the size of the stove or fireplace. Wood was used out of doors too. On wash day, they had to heat large kettles of water. Laundry was not done inside of the house. The clothing was boiled if anyone was sick, but usually the hot water was taken out, and put into a wash tub. Clothing was scrubbed by placing it on a large table or bench, or a scrub board was used to rub the dirt out of the clothes. All of the clothes were scrubbed with handmade soap, then either put back into the boiling pot to be rinsed, or the soapy water was thrown out and wash tub was refilled to rinse the clothes before hanging up to dry. Wood piles were as common as barns. Cotton and rice were the major crops that could be exported at that time.
The area around Weiner is where most of the rice is grown. Rice is grown in water. The rice farmer flooded the rice fields at certain times during the growing season. Standing water produces mosquitoes.
Grandpa (Henry) Cox was born in either Posey County or Terre Haute, Indiana. He was Alfred H. and Martha Jane (Mandy)’s second child. When Grandpa Henry’s family got to Arkansas, the area around Bono was flooded. Grandpa (Henry) Cox met and married Grandma (Lula Joiner) on March 3, 1896.
