all his life. He served in the Civil War for three years and eight months as
a member of Company K 58th Indiana Reg. being a sergeant of his company. He was
united in marriage to Mary Ann Karnes March 13 1867. To this union were born
nine children, 8 of whom survive as follows; Mrs. Sam Meyers, of Vincennes,
WA Wheeler of Princeton, Isaac Wheeler of East St. Louis, Floyd Wheeler of Evansville,
Mrs. David Phillips of Memphis Tenn., Mrs. Claude Speer of Evansville, DB Wheeler
of Princeton, and Mrs. Nellie Brazelton of Princeton. A son Wesley Wheeler is

Mr. Wheeler was identified with the city of Princeton as a member of the city
council for a number of years. He was a member of the General Baptist Church
at Enon.
Charles Wheeler was congenial, a good neighbor and a good friend, one to be depended
upon at all times. Because of these qualities he will sadly be missed in his
home circle and among his associates especially his comrades of the G.A.R.
This was in the Bible of Nellie Braselton.
58th Reg. Ind. Inf. was organized at Princeton in Oct and Nov 1861. Shortly after
organized and mustered in was sent to Louisville, KY. and assigned to Wood Division
of Buell's Army and during the winter 1861-62 campaigned in Central KY. going
as far south as Bowling Green. On March 1, 1862 went to Nashville and remained
there until the movement of the army towards Pittsburg Landing began in April.
It reached Shiloh on the evening of the 2nd days battle and took no active part
in that engagement. It moved with army to Cornith, Miss. and after evacuation
of that place moved into northern Alabama and then on to Shelbyville, Tenn. from
there to Decherd and when Buell's army marched in the pursuit of Bragg is joined
that army reaching Louisville on Oct 1, 1862. Dec 27th was severely engaged with
army at Lavergne making sucessful and brilliant charge on enemy line.
On Jan. 24, 1864 Reg. reinlisted as a veteran Reg and returned to Indianapolis
on veteran furlough arriving in that city March 4, 1854. Upon to returning to
Chattanoga after it's furlough, in April was assigned to Engeneer Corps and imediately
took charge of platoon train of Sherman's Army. This Reg. did all the bridging
over streams for Sherman's Army from Chattanoga to Atlanta, bridging some of
the streams 16 times after under fire of the enemy. When Gen. Sherman's Army
started on it's campaign to Savannah [march to the sea] the 58 Ind. Reg. was
assigned to duty with the army of Georgia. In this campaign the Reg. did all
the bridging and repairing of roads from Atlanta to Savannah including the bridge
accross the Savannah River. On Dec. 31, 1862 & Jan 1-2-3-1863 participated
in battle of Stove's River, after Stove's River battle went into camp with army
in and about Murfreesboro and remained there until Rosecruns started on his Tullabimma
or middle Tenn. campaign. It was the first brigidade under Com. Buill of the Union
Army to enter Chattanoga. It took part in March to Lee & Gardm's Mill reaching
there on Sept. 11, 1863 remaining there until the battle of Chickamauga on Sept
19th and was -----engaged during both 19th and 20th of Sept. in this battle.
Was in the battle of Mississippi Ridge on Nov. 23, 1863 and in this engagement
was one of the Reg of Wagner's Brigade, Sheridan's Div. after Miss. Ridge battle
they went with 4th Army corps to the relief of Burnside at Knoxville to the city,
this bridge being over 3000 feet in length. In campaign through South Carolina
to Goldsboro SC the 58th did all bridging of Georgia including second bridge
over the Savannah River at Sister's Ferry. While attached to Engineer Department
though in no heavy engagements the Reg. was exposed to the fire of the enemy
almost constantly, this reg. being the first to reach a stream and last to leave.
The greater part of time it's work being done at night with enemy on oposite
bank. After surrender of Johnson Army this Regiment marched to Washington City,
bridging all the streams on the route except the James River. After the final
