The following was extracted from "The Jonesboro Gazette" of June 10th
1871
He [Levi Graham] had a neighbor, also a remarkable man, though altogether a different
character ---BenJamin McCravens---who emigrated from North Carolina one year
after Graham [1818] and settled in that vicinity {about 10 miles south of Jonesboro
on the road leading to Cape Girardeau, Mo.[Missouri] was where Graham settled}.
McCravens was an athletic man and a farmer as well as a good hunter and was a
man of good social qualities and, unlike Graham, was well respected and stood
high with his neighbors. He was "some" of the muscle being hard to
whip and when in his "cups" would as soon fight as eat. He raised quite
a family. One of his sons was made sheriff of Alexander County [Illinois]. Ben
McCravens, though a wild rough kind of man, had a large heart filled with the
milk of human kindness. He embraced religion and was for a number of years before
his death an orthodox christian and a member of the Methodist Church.
McCravens one fall found that somebody was making nocturnal visits to his corn
crib and surreptiously abstracting grain there from. He stood awhile and then
said nothing, but it becomming rather to common, and losing his corn rather fast,
he concluded to set a large wolf trap in his crib. The second morning afterwards,
he went out early to feed his stock and found our old friend, Levi Graham, standing
by the crib and an empty bag at his feet. Here was a surprise indeed, for McCravens
had not suspected his neighbor. He at once addressed him "Good morning Levi,
come in and get warm. We have a good fire." knowing all the time that the
wolf trap held him and he could not get away.. He let him stand there for an
hour or so, although it was pretty cold. Finally Grimes [sic] began to beg him
and cry; he promised McCravens that if he would unfasten him and let him go,
without exposure, and for the sake of his children not disgrace him with public
prosecution, he would repay him for the corn and pledge himself never again to
steal corn or anything else while he lived. McCravens, taking pity on his family
and beliving his promise, released him and invited him in for breakfast. McCravens
said nothing about the transaction until a number of years had passed. But Grimes
[sic] kept his word and ever after that he conduted himself in such a manner
as to be considered an honest man. Parents: Duncan Benjamin

Possible Fathers for Duncan:
A "Thomas McCreaven" was recorded in the Hearth Money Rolls [This was
a tax on each fireplace in the house.] for the Townland of Dundesard in the Parish
of Killeade in the County of Antrim in Ireland in 1669.
There was also a "John McCreave" of Carnmoney Parish in County Antrim,
Ireland whose name appeared on a 1775 list of protestant descenters.
John McRaven was in this Country before 1771-He was on a commission to build
a road-in the County-that year-I think the others came in 1774-75.
I had heard that they had a farm 120 acres of land in Maryland-close to where
Baltimore is today and before the Revolutionary War-The British drove them off-and
from there they went to the Carolina's which at that time was NC, because SC
came in the Union in 1788-a year after Benjamin was born.[Gerald McRaven] Parents:
