Mandy was born in Posey County Indiana on Janurary 5, 1845 to William Sanders (born in 1818 in Kentucky) and Lattcia Dunbar (born in 1822 in Posey County). They lived in Indiana, near Evansville. Education wasn’t a high priority for women, but she as well as most women were educated in the basics. She was also trained in the womanly arts of sewing and needle crafts. She made her own clothing by hand, and was very knowlegable in the art of cooking and preserving. Her talent was in the art of making medicine out of roots and berries. Every spring and fall, she would go out into the woods, and pick everything necessary to make these mixtures. She made soap, lotions tonics, teas, salves, and poltices . She would sell these products. When she and Alfred married, she was living in Evansville, Indiana with her family, she was 22 years old. They had 4 boys: John William ( ), Henry (Oct 10, 1873), Alvin (Sept 30, 1875), and Benjamin Harrison (April 10, 1878). They headed out to Arkansas leaving both families behind. The exact year they arrived is unknown but it was probably somewhere around 1885-88. The children were all were pretty big when they arrived in Arkansas, ranging in age from 10 years old to teenagers. After Alfred died, and Mandy got older, she moved in with Benjamin Harrison and his family. They ran a store and she still went into the woods every spring and fall to pick those herbs to make themedicines to sell in their little store.
She wore an apron most of the time, as most women did, and there was even a special apron she had to wear to church. It was very fancy. She would dress up in a pretty clean blouse and nice skirt, and put the apron over it. There were several older women in the church that did the same thing. She liked to sew on the treadle sewing machine. She and Blanche (BH’s daughter) shared the bedroom, and she would make Blanche an apron to match hers. They were very close. One year, she fell and broke her hip. The doctor was called, and the children were very excited that the doctor was coming. Unfortunately, medicine was still in it’s infancy, and there was nothing they could do. The doctor left her with pain medicine and crutches. She lived about 5 years more. When she walked on the crutches, her leg just dangled. She would help, as well as she could, with the chores and the children after that. She developed dropsy in that leg, and during her last years, her leg would swell up and weep. Air conditioning was not invented during those days. Electricity may not have reached Bono either. Some areas did not have electricity until the 1950’s. So in the summer, the family would move her chair around the house following the shade. She lived until she was 83 and Blanche was about 12 years old. She died from heart failure, with the family around her on a Sunday morning. She raised he hand and BH got right into her face. She called for Blanche before she died. Mandy died on July 28, 1928. She is buried by her husband and son in Trinity Cemetery in Bono.
